Bill and Carolyn Hamrick Human Services Scholarship

This scholarship was endowed by Carolyn, Dave and Kathy Dunn Hamrick and their children Jacob and Hannah, and Joe and Elin Ferrell Hamrick, in honor of the late Dr. Bill Hamrick and Carolyn Hamrick, and is awarded to deserving SFA students who are pursuing any program, certification, or standard curriculum, including minors and doctorates, being offered by the Department of Human Services. Recipients must have an average grade-point average of 2.5 or higher.

Dr. Hamrick graduated from East Texas State Teachers College at Commerce with a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture and a Masters of Education in secondary education and also earned his Doctorate of Education in counseling psychology from the University of Missouri at Columbia. He joined the S.F.A. faculty in September 1962 and taught for 26 years. He served as the first chairman of the Department of Human Services, called School Services then, from 1969 until his retirement in 1988. During his tenure, he initiated many of the department programs and curricula that remain vital today including Orientation and Mobility, Visual Impairment, Counseling, Special Education, and Speech Language Pathology.

Carolyn Lemon Hamrick was his supportive and loving wife for 62 years. Carolyn was active in the Women’s Faculty Club, and worked for Crawford Building Materials as an interior decorator for many years. Bill and Carolyn were lifelong members of Westminster Presbyterian Church, he serving as Elder and she being a leader in Presbyterian Women.

Impact

Carolyn, Dave and Kathy Dunn Hamrick and their children Jacob and Hannah, and Joe and Elin Ferrell Hamrick, endow this annual scholarship to the memory of a wonderful man who dedicated his entire professional life to education, S.F.A. and the Department of Human Services. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student who has an average GPA of 2.5 or higher and who is pursuing any program, certification, or standard curriculum, including minors and doctorates, being offered by the Department of Human Services.
