Kurt and Cindy Kalkomey

Kurt and Cindy Kalkomey

Kurt and Cindy received their BS and MS degrees from SFASU, in biology and mathematics/statistics, respectively. They are grateful for the potential that major professors, Dr. Jack McCullough and Dr. Jasper Adams, saw in them even when they did not recognize it themselves. They also know that the solid education received from Drs. McCullough and Adams, as well as from SFASU as a whole, was a factor in the opportunities they were able to pursue and any success that was achieved in their professional lives. They are extremely pleased to be able to honor these men and to give something back to SFASU.

Their hope is that the scholarship will boost one exceptional student across the finish line every four years. So, if an awarded student is granted the scholarship and stays in good standing, he or she will continue to receive funds for full tuition, room, and board until graduated.

A concern they have as they look to the future is whether the U.S. is producing enough scientists and mathematicians to tackle the challenges ahead. They want to help bright young people with a demonstrated ability in math and/or science, but without the financial means to further their education, to pursue a degree in those fields at SFASU. They are also concerned that the gap between the number of young women versus young men graduating in certain STEM degrees is not narrowing. Thus, it is the donors’ wish that this scholarship, in particular, aid qualified young women to pursue a degree in math and/or science.
