Mr. and Mrs. Bob and Shirley Sitton

A native of Cushing, Sitton graduated from SFA in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. He received a master’s degree in 1969 from Sam Houston State University. Prior to joining the SFA staff in 1972, Sitton was a teacher and coach at Cushing High School, C.E. King High School in Houston and Klein High School in Spring. Sitton was named 1970 District Coach of the Year.
Sitton spent the next 26 years at the helm of the SFA Alumni Association, guiding the organization as it increased its scholarship endowment, boosted membership numbers and created many of the alumni programs that still exist within the organization today.
In 1988, Sitton, his brother Danny and sister Betty established the Layton and Elweno Sitton Scholarship in memory of their parents.
Sitton stepped down as executive director in 1998 but remained with the organization on a part-time basis as the association’s public relations director. Sitton retired fully in 2006.
Sitton received the alumni association’s Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1998 and was inducted into the university athletic department’s Jacks of Honor in 2003.
Sitton is former chairman of the College Alumni Directors of Texas and a member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education, Council of Alumni Association Directors, Nacogdoches County Chamber of Commerce and Bethany Baptist Church. Sitton and his wife Shirley have three children and four grandchildren.

Impact

The Bob and Shirley Sitton Scholarship will benefit descendants of Sitton’s family or a graduate student assistant in the Lumberjack athletic program who plans to enter the coaching profession.
